This Is Head Country.

The year was 1945. Donovan Fred “Uncle Bud” Head found himself sailing the high seas on a Navy ship, headed for war. A far cry from his family ranch in rural Oklahoma, he knew that his fellow sailors also longed for the comforts of home. As the ship’s chef, Uncle Bud decided to share a little taste of Oklahoma that he hoped everyone would enjoy.

And boy, did they.

The sauce he served wasn’t particular to any region. Its balanced blend reminded all of the sailors of home, no matter where they called home.

It was a hit. Uncle Bud had seemingly found his calling.

After the war, he began sharing the sauce with his friends and family. They’d trek up to his ranch with empty Mason jars for him to fill. It wasn’t long before he moved out of his home kitchen and set up shop in Ponca City, Oklahoma, to keep up with the demand.

To this day, Head Country Bar-B-Q is still crafted in Ponca City. And while its popularity and legend has grown, we stay true to our roots. Because it’s not just about making a great sauce, it’s about bringing people together.

And there’s no better cause for celebration than that.
